Faith Academy cross-country runner breaks school record
FROM STAFF REPORTS
WACO — Faith Academy cross-country runner Sophie McCannon won the Baylor Invitational on Sept. 14 to lead the Lady Flames to eighth overall.
Coach Steven McCannon, her father, said her time of 13 minutes 3.11 seconds set a new school record and would have won the Class 2A state championship of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools last year.
“Sophie ran a smart race and really surged the last mile,” he said. “She has worked really hard, and it shows. Sophie will be ready at state to contend for the title.”
The coach commended veterans Sierra Brinkley and Rachel Ormsby and added he was pleased with the way newcomers Danyelle Morris and Hailey Shipley ran.
The meet drew a total of 14 squads.
“We enjoy going to the Baylor invitational for the chance to run on our state meet course,” McCannon said. “We had a good mix of competition to help us see where we are at. We did not have several girls from last year’s team run this year, so we will have a challenge to get on the podium.”

“I am really proud of the girls for coming out and competing for the school in something that is not easy and takes some guts. Cross country builds character but, more importantly, reveals character,” McCannon said.
