OBITUARY: Oscar ‘Leroy’ Hale, 96, of Llano dies Sept. 2, 2013
Oscar “Leroy” Hale, 96 of Llano passed away peacefully Sept. 2, 2013. He was born Dec. 18, 1916, in Runnels County to R.A. and Thelma (Lane) Hale.
His family moved from Tennessee to Texas in his early years and farmed and ranched.
Leroy married Fayrene Golden in Ballinger, Texas, on Oct. 9, 1937. They were married 68 years until Fayrene’s passing in 2006.
He was an auto mechanic in Midland, Austin and Llano. He worked for Ratliff Auto for 26 years.
Leroy joined the U.S. Navy in San Angelo and was sworn in Sept. 11, 1942, in Dallas. He was sent to Green Bay, Wis., for six weeks of boot camp. From there, he was stationed at New Orleans Naval Station until being sent to Norfolk, Va., and transported aboard ship to the Panama Canal Zone, 15 NAV Station. There, he operated the engines for sonar and radar at Summit and Farfan Radio Stations and also maintained military vehicles and equipment. He was transferred to Boston and Provincetown, Mass., where he remained until he completed his tour of duty.
He was honorable discharged at Camp Wallace, Texas, on Oct. 11, 1945.
Leroy is survived by his daughters, Nancy Lawyer and husband Dan and Donna Scott and husband Nelson; brother, F.B. “Top” Hale; grandchildren, Gary, Jimmy, Roy, Dani, Tina and Steven; nine great-grandchildren, Trever, Brayden, Kyle, Justin, Madelyn, Merrit, Spencer, Cameron and Christian; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service is 11 a.m. Sept. 5 at Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home, 307 E. Sandstone in Llano, (325) 247-4300, with James Sanderson officiating. Military graveside honors provided by the Highland Lakes Honor Guard will follow at Llano City Cemetery.
