Marble Falls, Burnet compete in Mustangs’ 7-on-7 state-qualifying tournament

MARBLE FALLS — Two familiar foes kicked off the start of the Marble Falls 7-on-7 state-qualifying tournament June 22. And the game between Burnet and Marble Falls lived up to expectations.In the end, the Mustangs’ final drive of the game ended with quarterback Brennen Wooten hitting receiver Ty Coffey for the 37-34 win.
Both teams beat Bastrop. Marble Falls won 32-13, and Burnet was victorious 28-13.
Both squads fell to Hutto, which went on to earn one of the automatic bids to the state tournament. The Mustangs lost 39-36, and the Bulldogs fell 37-34.
The Hippos raced to a 19-7 halftime lead thanks to nabbing two interceptions. But with four minutes left, Marble Falls had a chance.
Defensive back David Spurlock recorded an interception for a touchdown. And receiver Eric Cauble caught the extra-point pass to trim the deficit to 39-28.
The Mustang defense held on the ensuing possession. But so did Hutto.
With about two minutes left, Marble Falls running back Keith Jerome scored a touchdown and Coffey caught the two-point pass, but time ran out.
The Bulldogs led Hutto throughout the contest, but the Hippos won on the last drive.
Burnet entered the tournament with a 25-0 7-on-7 record.
