Faith Academy named Private School Team of the Year by Texas Football Magazine

MARBLE FALLS — The Faith Academy football team earned another honor months after finishing the 2012 season with an 11-1 record in its first year playing 11-man football.

The Flames were named the Texas Football U.S. Army Private School Team of the Year by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine.

“I was almost in shock,” Flames head coach Russ Roberts said.

Faith Academy captured the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Division III District 4 title and an area championship before losing to Halletsville Sacred Heart in the regional round of the playoffs.

Texas Football Magazine writers picked the Flames to be repeat district champions in 2013, Roberts said.

“It’s a little frightening,” he said. “I’m coaching guys who, although they have athletic skill and athletic ability, they’re learning to (prepare) and compete.”

Roberts said the one advantage his squad had a year ago was that opponents had never faced his team before, so they didn’t know how to prepare for them or might have taken them lightly as a newcomer to 11-man football.

“We’re (now) a target school,” he said. “We’re not going to sneak up on people. They know who we are. They have a chance to upset the (TAPPS) team of the year.”

Faith opens the season against Austin St. Dominic Savio on Aug. 30 at the Round Rock Independent School Athletic Complex, 300 Lake Creek Drive in Round Rock.
