BURNET — Burnet Consolidated Independent School District athletes started a six-week strength-and-conditioning program June 17 — but with a twist.
Leading the program for the first time is Speed Killz Period, a group out of Leander that specializes in strength-training and conditioning camps.
“We want our kids to be stronger, faster and more explosive,” Burnet athletic director Kurt Jones said. “We really want to focus in on conditioning.”
In all, 112 athletes, including 27 girls, participated, Jones said.
“That’s off the charts,” he said. “That’s better than anything we’ve had. We felt really good about this group.”
The workouts are Mondays-Thursdays with high school boys 7-9 a.m. and girls and middle school boys participating 9-11 a.m. The cost is $80.
Bringing in an outside group to lead the workouts made sense for several reasons, Jones said.
BCISD coaches aren’t under contract during the summer, he said. And by University Interscholastic League rules, coaches aren’t allowed to work with their own athletes outside designated practice times anyway.
Speed Killz Period’s last day is Aug. 1, so Jones is hoping athletes will be in great shape to start two-a-days Aug. 5.
Speed Killz Period also is working with athletes in Lampasas, Jones said.
