MARBLE FALLS — One more meet remains for this season’s Marble Falls High School track-and-field team: the Class 4A state meet May 10.

Three Mustangs will compete for a state title: Rey Baltazar in the discus, Cody Schulz in the 400 meters and Sarah Lewis in the 300-meter hurdles.

Baltazar’s mark of 166 feet 1 inch at the regional meet was the third-best heave out of the nine throwers who are competing at state.

“Rey has practiced really well the last two weeks,” Marble Falls head track-and-field coach Kyle Futrell said. “It’s important for Rey to get a good throw off early. I’m really looking forward to Rey competing and throwing his best effort ever.”

Schulz and Lewis enter the meet with the ninth-best times at regionals. Schulz clocked 49.39 seconds, while Lewis finished in 46.65.

“You’re running against the best around,” Futrell said. “Our job is to go out there and run as well as we’ve ever run and take advantage of the moment with respect to the big event. Before you qualified, you had to go make it. For Cody, it boils down to him running his best time of the year.”

Since Lewis is competing in a hurdle event, the strategy is a little different, the coach said.

“If you run a clean race, the potential for running faster is there,” he said. “We’ll focus on the hurdles and running a good clean race. I would anticipate Sarah could run better just because she’s not running the (4×400-meter) relay.”

The Class 4A State Track and Field Meet is May 10 at Mike A. Myers Stadium, 707 Clyde Littlefield Drive in Austin. Baltazar throws at 11:30 a.m., Schulz runs at 7:45 p.m. and Lewis follows at 8:05 p.m.
