Marble Falls softball loses Game 1 in series against Lockhart; Game 2 is May 3

GEORGETOWN — Errors and timely hits helped Lockhart defeat the Marble Falls High School softball team 8-2 on May 2 in Game 1 of a best-of-three second-round playoff series.

Twice, Marble Falls had the bases loaded. And twice, Lockhart forced the Lady Mustangs to strand runners.

By contrast, Lockhart only left the bases loaded once.

“They exposed some things we have to work on,” Lady Mustangs head coach Tino Salazar said.

Lockhart’s Gabby Ybarra scored on a throwing error from second base in the second inning to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Lions added to it in the third, plating two earned runs and one unearned.

Marble Falls responded in the fifth when senior third baseman Hailey Wooten hit a standup two-run double with no outs to trim the deficit to 4-2. The next three batters were outs.

The score stood until the seventh inning. Lockhart scored four runs with at least two on errors.

Winds about 30 mph blew throughout the contest and kept at least two balls in the park that would have been home runs, Salazar said.

In addition, the wind made it challenging to catch popups because infielders couldn’t tell where the ball would fall.

But most important, Salazar noted, the difference in the contest came down to the last statistic on the scoreboard.

“We can’t win with six errors,” he said. “We’re going to eliminate that, and we’re going to try to hit.”

He credited Lockhart for making the most of its opportunities, noting stolen bases and being aggressive in scoring runs.

“I didn’t want the game to be determined by the weather,” he said. “I’m glad it didn’t. I really think just the errors was the problem. We have to come back and eliminate the errors.”

Game 2 is 7 p.m. May 3 at Georgetown East View High School, 4490 E. University. A third game, if necessary, would be played at 1 p.m. May 4 at East View.
