For golf enthusiasts who have more putt than drive, visit the miniature-golf course at the Heart of Texas Lake Resort on Lake LBJ in the Hoover’s Valley area. The course is 18 holes of fun with colorful statues and creative, challenging holes.
Putt-putt history
Today’s version of miniature golf is not so different from the first patented course built in 1927 on Lookout Mountain in Tennessee. Called Tom Thumb Golf, it was built by Garnet Carter and had a fairyland theme. Course surfaces, accessories and the design were patented by several entrepreneurs during what might have been mini-golf’s most popular years: the 1920s and 1930s. In the 1930s, about 30,000 links were built across the country. New York City had 150 rooftop courses.
In the Highland Lakes, there is only one course, and you’ll find it at the Heart of Texas Lake Resort. The resort also features an outdoor shuffleboard court, an arcade room and playscapes for the kids.
