AARP Driver Safety Course
An AARP Driver Safety Course is 10 a.m.-3 p.m. May 6 at the Highland Lakes Senior Center, 35 Chamberlain St. in Kingsland. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers. Bring your current AARP card and driver’s license. Lunch will be available. The class might qualify students for an auto insurance discount. To register and reserve lunch, call (325) 388-4653.
BPH seminar
A free seminar on Benign Prostate Hyperplasia is 6 p.m. April 30 at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites Marble Falls, 714 Corazon Drive. CASI chili cookoff
The Highland Lakes Pod CASI Chili Cookoff is May 5 at Johnson Park, 230 Ave. J South in Marble Falls. The public is invited to judge starting at 1 p.m. Proceeds will help the Marble Falls Area Volunteer Fire Department, The Helping Center of Marble Falls and Marble Falls Boy Scouts Troop 284. Fish fry
Highland Lakes Knights of Columbus Council 8935 of Burnet holds a fish fry 5-7 p.m. the first Friday of the month at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, 507 Texas 29 West in Burnet. The cost per plate is $8. The dinner includes two baked or fried filets, fries, hushpuppies, coleslaw, dessert and tea or coffee. Money raised benefits the Burnet and Llano High School Scholarship Fund.
Friends of Kingsland Library fundraiser
Chili’s will donate 10 percent of sales 4-10 p.m. April 24 with each Friends of the Kingsland Library flier presented by diners at the restaurant, 702 First St. in Marble Falls. Fliers may be picked up at the Kingsland Branch Library, 125 W. Polk St. in Kingsland, or from a Friends of the Kingsland Library member.
Garage sale fundraiser
A garage sale fundraiser for Burnet Eastern Star Chapter #425 is 8 a.m.-4 p.m. April 26 and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. April 27 at Valley Lodge Masonic Lodge, 311 S. Main St. in Burnet. Items include books, vinyl records, kitchen items, clothes, purses, dishes, china and more.
Golf tournament fundraiser
The 11th annual John Franklin Scholarship Association golf tournament is April 27 at Delaware Springs Municipal Golf Course, 600 Delaware Springs Blvd. in Burnet. A shotgun start is 9 a.m. The cost of the four-person scramble is $150 a person and includes a greens fee, a cart, sodas, the April 26 fish fry (player and a guest) and the April 27 shrimp boil (player and a guest). Proceeds benefit the John Franklin Golf Endowment at Abilene Christian University. The fish fry and shrimp boil will be at Franklin Ranch. Call William Franklin at (361) 522-1191.
Harmony School programs
The Harmony School of Creative Arts Musical Theatre Department is presenting “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” at 7 p.m. April 26 and 27. A special children’s program is 10:30 a.m. April 27 and free with a canned food donation. Also, the school is enrolling participants 3 years to adult in its summer camps for art, dance, drama, music, cheer and tumbling, sewing, cooking and more. The fourth annual Performathon is 1-8 p.m. May 18 and 1-6 p.m. May 19 with musical performances, a silent auction and refreshments. The event raises money for scholarships. Howdy-Roo event
The 42nd annual Howdy-Roo Regional CASI Chili Championship/19th annual Lonestar BBQ State Championship is May 4 at Johnson Park, 230 Ave. J South in Marble Falls. Judges are needed for the chili, beans and barbecue competitions starting at 11 a.m. The event features arts, crafts, food vendors, prizes, a silent auction and more. Proceeds will help the Marble Falls Area Volunteer Fire Department, The Helping Center of Marble Falls and Marble Falls Boy Scouts Troop 284. Memorial Day balloon release
A Memorial Day balloon release by American Legion Auxiliary Unit 437 in honor of veterans is 11 a.m. May 27 at the arena of Cross and Spurs Cowboy Church, 101 Lillian Dean at RR 1431 in Buchanan Dam. The public is invited. The cost to place a service person’s name and branch in a balloon is a $1 donation. The names of those who were prisoners of war or missing in action will be placed in a black balloon; killed in action in a gold balloon; and all others serving currently or in the past in a red, white or blue balloon. National Day of Prayer
A National Day of Prayer event is noon May 2 in front of the Kingsland Branch Library, 125 W. Polk St. in Kingsland. The 2013 theme is “Pray for America.” The non-political event will be led by various individuals, and local leaders will be recognized. Everyone is invited. Bring a lawn chair. Pet PALS clinics
Pet PALS is holding a low-cost spay/neuter clinic April 27 at its facility, 2003 RR 1431 West in Marble Falls. Grant money will cover the cost of surgeries for pets of residents of Marble Falls and Kingsland. Other financial assistance is available. For appointments, call (830) 598-7729.
Rummage sale
Highland Lakes United Methodist Church is holding a rummage sale 9 a.m.-2 p.m. May 4 at the church, located at RR 1431 and Texas 29 in Buchanan Dam. The event features a craft booth, a bake sale, a light lunch and a silent auction. Proceeds go toward a planned church addition.
WOW spring luncheon
The Women of the Word committee of The Church at Horseshoe Bay invites area women to its annual spring luncheon at 11:30 a.m. April 25 in the fellowship hall at the church, 600 Hi Ridge Road in Horseshoe Bay. Humorist Becky Baker will be the guest speaker, and the St. Fred’s Gospel Quartet will perform. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased by calling the church office at (830) 598-8390.

Highland Lakes Democratic Women
The Highland Lakes Democratic Women club meets April 25 at Hidden Falls Restaurant, 220 Meadowlakes Drive in Meadowlakes. Registration and lunch are 11:30 a.m. The meeting is 11:45 a.m. Brittany Yelverton, the community outreach specialist at Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas in Austin, will speak at 12:10 p.m. Lunch is ham, macaroni salad and baked beans for $12, including tax, tip and dessert.
