MARBLE FALLS — The 13th annual Children’s Day Celebration is set for April 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Johnson Park, 230 S. Ave J.
The event, which is for children infant to 14 years, was inspired by an incident that happened to founder Ely Banuet Rodriguez. As a mother of three, she took her children to a carnival and saw how much money it cost to purchase tickets for rides and food. And she realized if it was a strain to her family’s budget, other families also might be feeling the pinch.
So she went to area businesses and asked about volunteering their services and talents to be part of a day to celebrate children.
Now more than 50 area businesses and organizations will each have learning centers or booths at the celebration. Learning centers are designed to teach children a skill.
But there’s still plenty of room for others to be involved, the founder said.
“We need individuals who can share their gifts and talents,” Rodriguez said.
“We need helping people at different learning centers to move things around,” executive committee member Lydia Madrid said. “It helps to make the load lighter.”
The hope is to have volunteers who know the proper way to brush teeth, style hair or care for a pet, they said.
“A lot of our families are very low-income,” Madrid said, “and, as a result, they don’t have access to a lot of things.”
The event includes a talent show directed by Barbara Bend, the director of Harmony School of Creative Arts. To enter, call (830) 693-1791.
Prizes will be drawn at 1:15 p.m., and items include bikes, video games, helmets and fishing poles.
Free food and refreshments will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
To volunteer, contact Rodriguez at (512) 755-3504 or at childrensdaytx@gmail.com.
