The publisher of the Texas Observer, Piper Stege Nelson (right), was the guest speaker at the Highland Lakes Democratic Women’s meeting March 28. Nelson, seen here with club member Myrna Armstrong, is an advocate of building democracy around the world and improving the lives of women and their political environment. She wrote a training manuel for women running in local elections as far away as Sierra Leone and has been active in political campaigns in Texas. Nelson also has worked for the Environmental Protection Agency and spent a year in Ecuador studying the economic, social and health conditions of women working on rose plantations. She earned her master’s degree at the University of Texas at Austin and her undergraduate degree from Carleton College in Minnesota. The club meets 11 a.m. the fourth Thursday of the month at Hidden Falls Restaurant, 220 Meadowlakes Drive in Meadowlakes. Courtesy photo
