MARBLE FALLS — The Marble Falls High School baseball team rolled to its sixth consecutive victory in a 14-0 thumping of Leander Vandegrift on March 26.
“Give credit to the kids,” Mustangs head coach J.T. Blair said. “The kids had a plan. When I first got here, they told me, ‘Coach, we’re going to be good.'”
The Mustangs got started early, scoring four runs in the first inning off RBIs from seniors Stacy Heinzatz, Mike Richardson, Jimmy Damico and Jay Watson.
Marble Falls exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning when Vandegrift pitcher Matt Moss faced 13 batters.
By the end of the contest, the Mustangs racked up 14 hits.
“Our approach at the plate was great,” Blair said.
Defensively, Marble Falls senior pitcher Cole Ridgely set the tone, only allowing two batters on base in five innings and throwing about 70 pitches.
“He had pretty good stuff,” Blair said about Ridgely. “I thought he had zip on his fastball, and his curveball was good, too.
The series finishes in Marble Falls on March 28 in a doubleheader because of the Easter holiday. Marble Falls pitchers Cody Goodman and Garrett Winslett will be on the mound.
“Every team in this district is evenly matched,” Blair said. “It really comes down to your kids making plays. This is an 18-game schedule. It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.”
