OBITUARY: Gail Smith, 68, of Llano was dedicated to raising awareness of carcinoid cancer

Gail Hopson Smith, 68, a lifetime resident of Llano, Texas, passed away Feb. 26, 2013, after a 15-year battle with carcinoid cancer.
Gail was born Feb. 25, 1945, to Cecil and Dorothy Hopson. She was captain of the school basketball team, the head cheerleader, voted Miss LHS and graduated from Llano High School. She was later inducted into the LHS Sports Hall of Fame for basketball.
Gail met and married Pete Smith on April 16, 1966, and raised three kids. She received a registered nursing degree and worked for Llano Hospital for many years. She was dedicated to raising awareness of carcinoid cancer.
She loved traveling, playing slot machines and attending the PBR National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas every year. Most of all, she loved watching her grandchildren’s school and sports activities
Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Pete Smith of Llano; sister, Shirley Appell of Llano; brother, Don Ray Hopson of Trinity; son, Pete Smith and wife Annalisa of Llano; daughters, Teresa Smith and Travis Simons of Liberty Hill and Sharla Smith and Casey Mosier of Llano; grandchildren, Ty Smith, Laramie Smith, Reilly Martinez, Cecelia Overstreet, Riley Mosier, Landry Lancaster and Brooke and Kristina Simons.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father and her beloved “Granny,” who raised her.
Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Feb. 28 at Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home, 307 E. Sandstone in Llano, (325) 247-4300. A graveside service is 3 p.m. March 1 at Six Mile Cemetery with the Rev. Jerald Moore officiating.
