Burnet girls end district play with loss, begin playoffs Feb. 12

LAMPASAS — An opponent that has slowed down the Burnet High School girls basketball team in District 8-3A showed up again Feb. 5.

Illness kept sophomore point guard Riley Scott, the Lady Dawgs’ top ball handler and leading scorer, out of the lineup in a 39-28 loss to Lampasas to end the regular season. Burnet (18-12, 7-3) finished second in district behind Liberty Hill and begins its postseason with a bi-district game Feb. 12 against Alvarado.

“It’s just been frustrating,” Lady Dawgs head coach Mike Cavender said. “It’s frustrating to me, it’s frustrating to the kids, it’s been frustrating to everybody. So we’re going to get well, we’re going to try to get healthy. We’re going to get one of (three) playoff spots, and we’re going to go play and have a little fun.”

Burnet shot 27 percent from the field Feb. 5 and committed 18 turnovers. The Lady Dawgs were 6-of-10 from the foul line. The Lady Badgers were 18-of-22.

“When you shoot 27 percent, you gotta play from behind. You get to that point in the game where you got to start fouling. It becomes a free-throw contest,” Cavender said. “I still feel like we’re pretty good. We get into the playoffs in another week and get all of our people back on the floor. I still think we can make a run at doing something.”
