KILLEEN — The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team lost to Killeen Ellison 2-0 on Jan. 25.

Ellison scored on a crossing pass when one of the players got behind the Marble Falls defense and the Mustangs lost track of him.

Marble Falls head coach Michael Nave said he was happy the Mustangs held Ellison to under its goal-per-game average of 3.5 a contest but noticed some areas his players need to address.

One is ignoring the surroundings and the playing field.

“t’s an old football field that has a huge crown on it. You can’t see the bench on the other side,” Nave said. “It got into our heads a little bit. And, also, we had to adjust our play. There’s no grass on it. The ball rolls away from you.”

As the game progressed, the Mustangs’ play improved, he said.

But the biggest obstacle Nave wants to address? Lack of goals.

“All of our games have been low-scoring games,” he said. “And, we do defend very well. We don’t have to score a lot of goals, but we have to figure out a way to score a few.”

Marble Falls welcomes Austin Crockett on Jan. 29. The Mustangs also are honoring coaches, players and members of the Granite Country Youth Soccer Association by giving free admission to any Mustang contest beginning with the junior varsity gold game at 4:30 p.m. Junior varsity purple plays at 5:45 p.m., while the varsity takes the field at 7:30 p.m. All games are at Mustang Stadium, 2101 Mustang Drive.

“I want those people that volunteered and put in all that work to understand that we recognize their efforts and what all they do for these kids, too,” Nave said.

QUOTABLE: “We’ve got to find a way to score. We don’t want to allow two goals in, but that’s a team that scored three on Round Rock Stony Point, scored five on Copperas Cove. So they have a very potent offense,” Marble Falls head coach Michael Nave said.

RECORDS: Marble Falls is 7-3-1 overall.
