The Lady Dawgs hadn’t beat the Lady Panthers in the past three years, including losing to Liberty Hill in the Class 3A Region IV final last February.
“We played to this level a little this year,” Burnet head coach Mike Cavender said about his team’s performance Jan. 11. “We hadn’t been able to sustain it. I’m proud of my kids. We’re young. We’re inexperienced. We’ve basically held serve.”
The Lady Dawgs led by as much as 19 points behind the 3-point shooting of senior guard Riana Bond, who nailed three in the first four minutes of the third quarter.
“She has come on like gangbusters,” Cavender said. “She was playing and shooting the ball like that this summer. She’s just now getting her stroke back.”
The Lady Panthers ended the third period on a 16-6 run, though Burnet never trailed.
