MARBLE FALLS – A Granite Shoals mother and her son are recovering after a crash Dec. 12 involving an 18-wheeler on Texas 71, just east of U.S. 281, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The collision happened just before 7:30 a.m. in the 5700 block of the highway at the entryway of Vulcan Construction Materials Co. in Burnet County.

Racquel Villagas of Granite Shoals and her 6-year-old son were eastbound in a 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, traveling behind a trailer rig, driven by Gerardo Rojas, 52, of Austin.

DPS reported the car collided with the back of the 18-wheeler, which was attempting to turn into the facility.

“She was blinded partially by the sun, failed to control her speed and ended up hitting the back of the 18 wheeler,” DPS Highway Patrolman Frank Randolph said.

Villagas and her son were transported by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries to University Medical Center Brackenridge in Austin. They were both wearing seat belts, according to the report.

Rojas refused treatment at the scene.

Traffic was temporarily delayed and crews cleared the scene by 8:30 a.m.
