Goodwill center coming to Marble Falls in early summer

MARBLE FALLS — A heavyweight in the “thrift store” business has confirmed opening a Marble Falls location in 2013.

Tara Anders, Goodwill Industries of Central Texas director of marketing, said they are planning on bringing a 21,000-square-foot operation to Marble Falls. It will combine retail and processing.

But that’s only part of the impact Goodwill Industries hopes to have on the area.

“In the longterm we’re looking at a careers academy once we get established in the community and get a understanding of what types of job skills are needed,” Anders said.

The facility, opening in June, will be located in a portion of the 58,000 square-foot former Sutherland’s building, 2510 U.S. 281 in Marble Falls.

The retail portion will take up approximately 12,000 square feet, Anders said.

While Goodwill is known for it’s retail stores, Anders said the company also stresses education and job opportunity programs.

“We offer a lot of education and job opportunity training for folks who are looking to join the workforce or rejoin the workforce,” she said. “Some of it includes teaching people how to apply for jobs and put resumes together.”

The organization is also working on establishing different certification programs which could include basic technical skills and basic nursing skills, she said.

“We’re all about education,” Anders said.

When the Marble Falls location opens, officials said it should employ about 20 people.
