ROCKDALE — The Burnet High School softball team won the Rockdale Tournament, going 6-0 at the event.

Lady Dawgs head coach Amanda Carpenter said the players had more to think about other than the tournament because of the deaths of classmates Sierra and Caleb Hardin, who died in a traffic accident on Texas 29 at CR 252 Feb. 23.

“The girls played hard with a saddened heart,” she said,” yet they came away with a tournament championship and a six-game winning streak.”

The Lady Dawgs had to come from behind to defeat Weimar 5-3 in extra innings.

Trailing 3-2 in the eighth, Shanel Waggoner recorded an RBI double and Grayson Edwards earned a walk.

Allison Eaton hit the RBI triple to the left-center field wall for the win.

Burnet began the tournament with wins against Killeen 9-1, Rockdale 8-0, Austin LBJ 5-1 and Groesbeck 2-0.

After the game, Weimar coaches and players prayed for the Lady Dawgs and presented them a sympathy card.
