Alice Brubaker Whitelock
Alice Brubaker Whitelock, 96, died Nov. 24, 2011. She was born Sept. 22, 1915, in Henderson.
Known as “Mommy Al” to many, she co-founded Camp Peniel in 1946 with her husband Gordon “Chief” Whitelock.
She met her husband at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. They settled in Houston, where he became the pastor of Pierce Junction Community Church and Almeda Bible Church.
She loved life as a pastor’s wife and had an amazing ability to bring Bible stories to life, opening others’ eyes to Jesus Christ’s love.
The couple started the camp out of a desire that young people should come to know Christ through faith in his substitutionary death on the cross.
God gave her the gift of loving others and the dynamic ability to direct a girl’s camp. She was and continues to be an inspiration and blessing to all.
She will be greatly missed, but what a legacy she left for all who had the honor to know her.
One of her favorite verses, Hebrews 13:5 taken from the Wuest Expanded Translation of the Bible, which she loved: “I will not, I will not cease to sustain and uphold you. I will not, I will not, I will not let you down.”
Survivors include son David Gordon Whitelock and wife Rosie, son Paul Richard Whitelock and wife Donna; daughter Mary Edith Whitelock Barber and husband Don Barber; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harley and Mary Louis Brubaker; her brother Harley “Bup” Brubaker; her husband; and granddaughter Whitney E. Whitelock.
A funeral service was Nov. 27 at Camp Peniel. Interment was also there.
