MARBLE FALLS — After five days of conditioning, the Marble Falls High School football team was rewarded with hitting —  lots of it — Aug. 6 when the Mustangs went through their base offense and defense.

Senior quarterback Zed Woerner started the intersquad scrimmage by tackling junior tight end Rey Baltazar on a 15-yard gain.

Senior Taylor Cauble lined up at fullback and was virtually unstoppable as he ran the ball.

But in fairness to the defense, the offense was going against the scout team, full of several newcomers to the varsity level.

The same can be said when several veterans moved to defense. The scout team offense struggled to move the ball and didn’t record more than five plays for positive yards. The others resulted in incomplete passes, runs for negative yards and an interception.

“With our first group we had in there, we moved the ball real well, I thought and defensively, we flew around the ball real well,” head coach Cord Woerner said. “Each group is gonna have to make some progress because everybody needs to get in there and help us some this year. As a whole, especially with our varsity kids, I was pretty pleased at this point.”

The Mustangs showed their versatility. Senior Bobby Hall lined up at slot receiver and cornerback, while Zed Woerner was at quarterback and safety. Cauble came in at linebacker. That versatility will be important, the coach said.

“I think if everybody plays to their potential, we got some receivers we can go with, we got some kids that can carry the ball,” Woerner said. “And I’m good with it.”

Some players struggled in knowing where to go during specific plays. Woerner mentioned he’d like to see immediate improvement in that area.

“We still have some guys who are struggling a little bit,” he said. “For the most part, yes. They knew what they were doing and did a good job with it.”

Zed Woerner commended the newcomers.

“The young guys have stepped up a lot more than I expected they would,” he said. “A few of the older guys I expected to step up haven’t stepped up. Those younger guys are filling in.”

Scrimmages allow players to showcase what they can do, the quarterback said, and that definitely happened Aug. 6.

“We’re going to need a lot of versatility, and I think we’ve got in in some areas and we’ve got it in most areas,” he said. “We don’t have really any big guys, we got a few. Our main thing is speed, especially on defense. And offense, it’s going to have to be the same way.”
