Judith Lunsford Myers, 65, of Marble Falls died May 18, 2011, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where she developed complications after surgery.

She graduated from Southwest High School in Kansas City and earned a degree in social work at Central Missouri State University.

She worked through the ranks of the Missouri state social work agency, rising to regional director of Title XX programs in Kansas City before becoming the director of the New Mexico Governor’s Committee on Concerns of the Handicapped (now the Commission on Disability) in 1979 in Santa Fe. She held that position for 26 years, serving six successive governors. She achieved numerous legislative successes in advancing the effective participation of persons with disabilities in everyday life and improving their opportunities to receive self-care services at home under state medical programs.

Her agency published one of the first travel guides in the country locating accessible accommodations for travelers with mobility impairments and, in 1990, she was invited by President George H. Bush to attend the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

After retiring, she and her husband of 29 years, Bern, moved to Marble Falls where she was active in the “Hooked on Threads” knitting group, started a dog-blanket donation project for local shelter adoption programs and was an avid player in her neighborhood’s domino group.

Survivors include her husband; her husband’s sister and nieces; her older sister Norma Kuehler of Dublin, Texas; and her sister’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A service is 2 p.m. May 31 at First United Methodist Church, 1101 Bluebonnet Drive in Marble Falls, across from H-E-B.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to organizations  that provide assistance to animals, such as Pet PALS of Marble Falls, P.O. Box 916, Marble Falls TX 78654.
