Lady Dawgs’ postseason ends in first round
LAKE TRAVIS — The Burnet High School softball team’s season ended April 30.
The Lady Dawgs (19-15, 6-4) lost 5-0 and 5-4 to Wimberley in the best-of-three bi-district series.
Junior pitcher Kristen Spinn was credited with both losses, though head coach Amanda Carpenter said there were six Burnet errors in Game 1.
Spinn gave up five hits, one walk and one earned run while striking out seven.
Samantha Lawrence led the Lady Dawgs with three singles, while Allison Eaton added two singles. Savannah Erskine and Kati Maldonado each recorded a single.
Burnet returned to Lake Travis High School with renewed determination to tie the series.
Though the Texans took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Burnet plated two runs in the second inning. Maldonado and Hillary Foster recorded back-to-back hits to start the inning. Ashleigh Glover hit a two-out single for an RBI.
Wimberley responded with a home run, a single and two-out double in the third inning for a 3-2 lead.
Spinn hit an RBI double, while Courtnie Crouch added a bunt hit for the other run to make it 4-3 in the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Wimberley rallied with a single and a down-the-line double to put runners on second and third with no outs.
Spinn recorded a strikeout. Burnet intentionally walked the next batter.
“(She) stuck out her bat and punched the ball to second base to score the tying run,” Carpenter said.
After two outs, the batter hit the first pitch up the middle for the game-winning walk-off single.
Spinn ended the game with five strikeouts and gave up five earned runs off 10 hits.
“The Lady Dawgs had a great season and just came up short in having a chance to advance,” Carpenter said.
