Lady Dawgs capture silver bracket plaque
MARBLE FALLS — The Burnet High School softball team (4-2) suffered only one loss at the Marble Falls Barbecue Classic during the weekend to win the silver bracket.
The Lady Dawgs earned wins against Austin Hyde Park, 7-2, Del Valle, 9-4, Odessa Permian, 2-1, and San Antonio Alamo Heights, 7-6.
The lone loss was to Kerrville Tivy, 7-6, in nine innings.
Junior pitcher Kristen Spinn was in the circle for all games and recorded at least three strikeouts per game.
She threw a one-hitter in the win against Permian with the hit coming in the seventh inning. The Lady Dawgs won because they executed a suicide squeeze for their first run, while a groundout produced the winning run.
Against Hyde Park and Del Valle, she recorded 16 strikeouts, six hits, two walks in 14 innings and allowed no earned runs.
Freshman Landree Thompson hit a three-run blast against Del Valle to secure the win.
Spinn and Allison Eaton each hit home runs in the victory against Alamo Heights. Spinn opened the scoring in the second inning, while Eaton hit hers in the sixth inning.
In the loss to Tivy, Burnet led, 3-0, going into the sixth inning. Tivy tied the game with a two-run homer and added a run for a 4-3 advantage headed into the seventh inning. The Lady Dawgs recorded an RBI double to tie game, only to lose in the ninth.
The Lady Dawgs hosted Marble Falls 7 p.m. Feb. 22 at Bulldog Diamonds, 1000 The Green Mile in Burnet.
