George ‘Bill’ May
George “Bill” May, 82, of Burnet and formerly of Lago Vista, died Jan. 17, 2011. He was born July 4, 1928, in Okolona, Ark., to Roy and Mamie Holder May.
He was a graduate of Henderson State University and East Texas State University, where he learned to be an effective principal, superintendent, coach and role model to many children.
After graduation he moved to Delight, Ark., and started teaching and coaching a junior high boy’s basketball team. He met the coach of the junior high girls’ basketball team, Jean Moore, and they married June 30, 1951.
While teaching and coaching in Delight, he was drafted by the Army during the Korean War and was stationed at Camp Chaffee in Fort Smith, Ark.
Survivors include son Bill May Jr. and his wife Tana of Tarzan; daughter Tammy Hullum and husband Jeff of Burnet; sister Margaret McMurtry of Arlington; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Jean in 2002; brother Roy “Bugs” May Jr.; and sister Anna Frances May Avery.
Visitation was Jan. 18 at Edgar Funeral Home, 109 N. Main St. in Burnet, (512) 756-4444.
A service is 2 p.m. Jan. 19 at the funeral home with the Rev. Tim Denton officiating.
Interment to follow in Cedar Park Cemetery, Cedar Park.
The family asks that memorials be sent to the Paint Rock Independent School District Bill May Memorial Fund in Paint Rock.
