Wendel L. Gilmore, 71, of Burnet, died April 7, 2010, in a Burnet hospital. He was born Feb. 23, 1939, in Temple to Richard Norman Gilmore and Rhoda Marie Shearin Gilmore.

He attended Temple High School and served two years in the Air Force. He was a lifelong law enforcement officer, serving as police chief in Nolanville, Castroville and Hamilton, and had also earned the Master Peace Officer Achievement Award.

He worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice from 1995-1998 and retired from Burnet County after serving as a justice of the peace for six years.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years Velda Gilmore; sons Bruce Gilmore and wife Jules of Haltom City, Kevin and wife Anita Gilmore of Hamilton, and Brian Gilmore and wife Shonda of Burnet; daughters Shearin Bogan of Waco, Melody Vernon of Hamilton and

Lanette Rowland of Rice; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brother Thelbert Gilmore of Bruceville-Eddy; and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation is 6-8 p.m. April 11 at Edgar Funeral Home, 109 N. Main St . in Burnet.

A funeral service is 1 p.m. April 12 at the First Baptist Church of Burnet, 108 S. Vanderveer St., with the Rev. Michael Wiggins and Dr. Ricky Guenther officiating.

Graveside service and interment are 4 p.m. April 12 at Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple.
