MARBLE FALLS — Marble Falls High School head softball coach David Orsag took a breath and shook his head.

“Same thing I’ve been telling you,” he said, “seems like the 29th verse.”

The Lady Mustangs (4-18, 0-2 in District 25-4A) lost <their home opener> to Hutto, 8-2, Tuesday.

“They scored one in the first, one in the second, one in the third,” Orsag said. “I don’t think any of them were earned. Three or four were unearned.”

Still, Marble Falls had some hope.

The Lady Mustangs scored a run in the fifth inning then held the Lady Hippos.

In the sixth inning, Marble Falls loaded the bases.

But a couple of base-running errors generated just one run. Another batter hit a ball that hit the dirt and spun in place, forcing the Lady Hippos to make a play and officials to rule whether the batter beat the throw. The ball was there in time.

Had the runner beaten the throw, it would have loaded the bases with one out and Marble Falls had the top of the order coming.

“We had an opportunity to score more runs,” Orsag said.

Junior pitcher Payton Peril threw for four innings. Freshman Alicia Macias took over in the fifth.

“(Peril) didn’t do a bad job,” Orsag said. “They started hitting her. They hit Alicia pretty good.”

Junior catcher Mackinzee Mayfield “was one of the bright spots,” he said.

Mayfield had two huge hits during the contest.

“She hit one that hit the bottom of the fence,” the coach said. “It hit that wind and knocked it down. She drilled one to right centerfield. She rounded first going for second, and they barely got her out.”

Freshman lead-off hitter Hailey Wooten put the ball in play and recorded an RBI when Marble Falls had runners on second and third, though she was not able to reach base as often as she previously had.

In all, the Lady Mustangs recorded eight hits but gave up 12.

“We have to score more runs, and we can’t make mistakes,” Orsag said.

Marble Falls will host Killeen High 7 p.m. Friday at Scearce Softball Field, 2101 Mustang Drive.
