MARBLE FALLS — The Marble Falls High School boys basketball team hosts its annual McDonald’s Classic today and Saturday.

This marks the Mustangs’ first tournament of the season.

The format is two round robins. Records determine which squads will play for tournament finishes.

Marble Falls will play in pool A against Austin Lanier, St. Michael’s and Fredericksburg.

Pool B is made up of Houston Second Baptist, Lake Travis, Belton and Round Rock Westwood.

The Mustangs have already beaten Fredericksburg, 49-37, Nov. 24.

They lost to Westwood, 94-68, Nov. 21.

Lake Travis is in the same District 25-4A as the Mustangs.

Marble Falls head coach Bruce Etheridge, who is in his first year here, said the  tournament would help the Mustangs.

“We’re looking forward to the tournament,” he said. “It’s a chance to get more home games and to get better. The way you gain experience is by playing games and playing different teams.”

Marble Falls is 1-3 overall. They also lost to Dripping Springs and Austin Crockett.

The Mustangs feature many first-year varsity players including Connor Docherty, Regis Parks, David Morgan, Austin Bacon and reserves David and Daniel Aulick, Quinten Causey, J’Vante Blanchard, Max Lazos and Shane Minnick.

Bron Etheridge has been averaging about 15 points a contest. Docherty and Parks are the long-range shooters, while Morgan and Bacon play posts.

The Mustangs skipper said the lack of experience is a factor, but he believes a foundation is being built for the future of the program.

Marble Falls will play Fredericksburg at 12:30 p.m. and St. Michael’s at 6:30 p.m. today.

Tournament games are at Max Copeland Gym, 2101 Mustang Drive.
