The Highland Lakes celebrated Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, on June 17 at St. Frederick's Baptist Church in Marble Falls, home of the future Black History Museum. Juneteenth marks the day — June 19, 1865 — that news of the abolition of slavery made its way to the southern parts of Texas, 2½ years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
