BURNET — The Burnet County Commissioners have declared a burn ban for the unincorporated regions of the county.

The commissioners imposed the ban at their meeting March 22.

“Hopefully, it will be short-lived and it will rain soon,” County Environmental Services Director Herb Darling said.

Recently, the U.S. Drought Monitor placed the county on the moderate list, Darling added.

“We’re dry,” Darling said. “We haven’t had any big fires lately. We have been real fortunate. But the extended forecast calls for above-normal temperatures through spring.”

The ban could remain in effect for 90 days, the commissioners said.

Several standard exceptions to the ban are allowed, including burns for “ceremony and warmth” and livestock, Darling said.

Violators are subject to a fine and Class C misdemeanor charges.

As a precaution, call the Sheriff’s Office at (512) 756-8080 before lighting any fires outside, officials said.
