Lady Mustangs coach wants consistency from squad
MARBLE FALLS — After the Marble Falls High School volleyball team’s sweep of Burnet and Cornerstone on Aug. 9, head coach Julie Downs said she has witnessed her Lady Mustangs win the first two matches of the season only to see them struggle at the TEX-fest Tournament in Wimberley days later.
Downs hopes to avoid that scenario this year and wants to see one important element when the tournament tips off Aug. 12.
“Consistency,” she said. “They have to be consistent.”
Downs has been installing a more complex offense that had fake jumps against Cornerstone to keep the opponent off balance.
In the end, though, the Lady Mustangs won because they limited their unforced errors on serves and serve-receive, relying on junior libero Stephanie Garcia to make solid passes to setters.
The setters didn’t have to run all over the court to get the ball. Instead, they spent the majority of the match near the middle of the court with plenty of time to bend knees, dry hands and give sets to hitters.
To Downs, this weekend serves as a great indicator of how much her program has matured and how much her players have grown.
That’s because only the top Central Texas squads attend the tournament, which draws powerhouses Poth, Fredericksburg, Liberty Hill and Salado.
The Lady Mustangs will play Salado at 10 a.m., St. Gertrudis at 1 p.m. and Stony Point at 2:30 p.m. at Wimberley High School Gym 2.
Also in attendance will be the Burnet Lady Dawgs. They will face the Wimberley junior varsity at 10 a.m., San Antonio Randolph at 1 p.m. and Clemens at 2:30 p.m. at Wimberley Junior High School Gym 1.
