BURNET — The Burnet High School volleyball team has been to the playoffs for three straight years, ever since Bethany Grissom took over as head coach.

The goals are no different as Grissom starts her fourth season at the helm.

That forced several athletes to take advantage of open gym Mondays at The Doghouse, where nets were set up allowing them to play pickup games.

“Overall, the majority of the girls came in ready,” Grissom said. “They put in some time. I think it shows.”

Senior Kati Maldonado agreed.

“We progressed a lot, especially from (Aug. 1),” she said. “Everyone is rusty, it’s coming off bit by bit. (Aug. 2) was pretty good.”

The Lady Dawgs have been busy working on conditioning and fundamentals. Several participated in an advanced camp the previous week conducted by New Braunfels High head coach Phyllis Fowler.

Grissom, who worked for Fowler before coming to Burnet, said her former boss was pleased with the intensity and desire to improve. Equally important, she said, Fowler raved about how the players paid close attention to everything she said.

That re-enforced the athletes’ resolve to extend the season beyond the first round of the playoffs, she said.

“They’re working hard,” she said. “I think we’re going to be good.”
