Lady Dawgs score early and often against Lady Jackets
LLANO — Under rainy and muddy conditions April 16, the Burnet High School varsity softball team humbled the Llano Lady Jackets, 9-2, for another District 8-3A win, inching closer to the playoffs and hoping for a co-championship with Liberty Hill.
“The rainy night proved to be a great night for the Lady Dawgs,” head coach Amanda Carpenter said. “We scored a run in the first and never looked back as we rolled to the victory.”
With the win, Burnet improved to 17-7 overall and 5-1 in district while staying on the heels of league-leading Liberty Hill. The Lady Dawgs play Leander Vandegrift today and close out district play Friday against Liberty Hill during senior night at the Bulldog Diamond.
Lady Dawg wins would give them a share of the district title while losses would leave them as the runner up. Either way, Burnet is playoff bound.
The Burnet hitting assault was led by junior Savannah Erskine with a single, a double and two RBIs, and senior Kerstyn Towslee’s two singles and one RBI.
Sophomores Kati Maldonado and Samantha Lawrence added a single each. Lawrence also scored three runs and had one stolen base.
While junior Ashten Huddleston scored a run and sophomore Allison Eaton crossed home plate twice, sophomore Courtnie Crouch was on an amazing race around the bases.
Besides hitting a single and recording two RBIs, Crouch scored three runs and stole three bases.
Sophomore pitcher Kristen Spinn allowed one earned run over seven innings and was credited with the win.
“Kristen Spinn pitched extremely well in very poor conditions,” the coach said.
Spinn struck out three, walked five and allowed only two hits.
