Changes may be coming to two-a-days
AUSTIN — A medical advisory board is urging the University Interscholastic League to have coaches at Texas schools scale back on two-a-day athletic practices during the broiling days of August.
As Texas continues to see more unbroken periods of triple-digit heat during the summers, the Medical Advisory Committee wants the UIL’s Legislative Council to change the two-a-day schedule for those workouts to preserve athletes’ health.
The council meets Sunday, Oct. 16, and Monday.
Dr. Rob O’Connor, superintendent of the Marble Falls Independent School District, said the Mustangs will follow the change if there is one.
“We’d adjust to be in compliance of UIL policy,” he said, but added that some UIL decisions should be made with local input.
The proposal includes major changes, said UIL athletic director Mark Cousins.
