WIMBERLEY — The Burnet and Wimberley high school football teams matched each other score for score during the teams’ final scrimmage of the season Aug. 20.
Each side scored at least four touchdowns. Burnet head coach Kurt Jones said the Bulldogs left Wimberley feeling very good about their performances on both sides of the ball.
“There’s tons of things to get corrected and straightened out,” he said. “We have a long way to go.”
Jones said top of the list of improvements is a quicker start, though he said the players didn’t allow a slow beginning to keep them down for long.
Still, missed tackles allowed the Texans to drive the ball downfield.
“We have to be better at (tackling),” the coach said. “For the most part, our effort was there. We saw some good things.”
Coaches mixed in players in different lineups on purpose, he said, adding they looked at about 24 players on offense in a variety of lineups.
“It wasn’t like we stuck completely with our first 11,” he said. “We played a bunch of kids and wanted to see a bunch of kids.”
Jones said senior quarterback Austin Moore and junior quarterback Koby Edwards performed well.
“Austin made some good decisions and stayed on pace of where we wanted him to be be,” he said.
He hit senior receiver Joel Johnson on a long touchdown pass and found junior receiver Steven Gallardo for a couple of touchdowns. One of those passes started as a two-yard pass that he ran about 70 yards to paydirt.
Junior running back Preston Reeves made the defense pay for trying to tackle him, the coach said, noting Reeves had “some good downhill runs. He did a good job blocking.”
Senior running back Keedrick Hill also played well as did the receivers, Jones said.
“We didn’t go into this game (wanting) to throw the ball 40 or 50 times,” he said. “We knew we wanted to look at a whole array of kids and plays.”
As for the defense, coaches paid extra attention to the players’ mechanics and emphasized improving in that area, Jones said.
Burnet welcomes Marble Falls for the season opener at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 28 at Bulldog Field, 1000 The Green Mile.
