JOHNSON CITY — The Pedernales Electric Cooperative is offering $50,000 in scholarships in 2015 to local high school and home-schooled seniors in its service area.

Applications for scholarships are due by March 27.

PEC will provide 14 scholarships in the spring with amounts ranging from $2,500 to one $10,000 scholarship. The scholarships can be used to pay expenses at any accredited university, college, junior college, technical school or trade school. Each scholarship recipient must be a high school senior, and his or her parents or legal guardians must be PEC members.

“One of the seven cooperative principles that guides PEC is a dedicated concern for its member communities,” said Eddie Dauterive, vice president of Member Services and the 2014 scholarship committee president. “By helping local students pursue their educational goals, the co-op is investing in their futures and their communities.”

Recipients will be selected based on an applicant profile, including academic performance, community involvement, extracurricular activities and financial need. Applicants also will be evaluated on an essay on the following topic: Identify the need for a nonprofit program to enrich, educate, serve or assist the residents of your community. How would this nonprofit benefit your community, and how would you create this organization?
