MARBLE FALLS — With the 51-45 overtime loss to Burnet ending about 12:15 a.m. Aug. 30, Marble Falls High School head football coach Matt Green said perhaps playing San Antonio Jay on Saturday, Sept. 6, was not so bad after all.

The game is 7 p.m. at Farris Stadium, 8400 Loop 1604 North in San Antonio.

“It gives us one more day,” Green said.

And he believes the Mustangs (0-1) will need it.

Jay defeated San Antonio Brackenridge 66-45 on Aug. 29, taking a 45-31 advantage at the half. Jay had 721 yards of total offense, rushing 43 times for 424 yards.

Jay is led by junior quarterback Moses Reynolds, who completed 15 of 26 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns and rushed 11 times for 278 yards and four touchdowns in the win. Running back Juan Ortega had 18 rushes for 114 yards and a touchdown, and Daytwon Sheridan caught nine passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns.

“They have a very dynamic offense,” Green said. “Their quarterback is a very, very rangy runner. They have a couple of good receivers. Offensively, they’re going to pose some problems. They have receivers who can make some catches.”

Jay utilizes the zone-read offense because of Reynolds’ running and passing abilities.

The Jay defense is led by cornerback Tre Fontenot, linebacker Genaro Coleman, safety Darius McClain, cornerback LaQuan Turner and defensive lineman Urson Mandujano.

Though Brackenridge lost, it had 427 yards of total offense, 347 in the air.

Green said he was not sure if that was first-game jitters or something else. Still, when Jay needed a stop, it got it he said.

“They made some big plays,” he said.

And he believes his team and Jay will be better in Week 2.

One of the goals for Marble Falls is to avoid mistakes that kill drives. During the loss to Burnet, the Mustangs suffered four turnovers, had a turnover on downs and mishandled the snap on field goal attempts.

Both Green and Bulldogs head coach Kurt Jones said they believed their teams left points on the field.

“We practice catching the ball on snaps every day,” Green said. “They do it in practice. I don’t know if it was nerves. It’s why you play the game, to eliminate mistakes and play better. You keep practicing. If we don’t have turnovers, we can’t be stopped.”

  1. Clock management was a big issue. Getting the plays in from the sidelines was a problem and timeouts had to be used because of it, and in our last possession… total game clock management meltdown?

To have our guys play their butts off, comeback to tie the game with a
2 point conversion, then waste the field goal opportunity because of time management? Looks like Jason Garrett and the Cowboys last year….
