MARBLE FALLS — The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team went 1-1 in back-to-back District 51-4A games Feb. 21-22.

The Lady Mustangs defeated Leander Rouse 3-2 but lost to Leander Vandegrift 5-0 in a makeup game originally scheduled for Feb. 7 that was postponed because of freezing weather.

Against Rouse, Marble Falls leaned on a new goalie, freshman Kaitlyn Tinsley, who made her varsity debut.

“All the midfielders and forwards played great,” Lady Mustangs head coach Trey Young said. “Very happy for girls’ hard work to finally pay off.”

The next day, the Lady Mustangs fell to Vandegrift in what Young called an odd game. They trailed 2-0 at halftime.

The coach noted opponents have been able to score first in Marble Falls’ lopsided losses.

He refused to use the fact they played back-to-back games as the reason for the outcome. He added the Lady Mustangs have done that before during tournament season in January.

“And Vandy played (the night before), too,” he said. “I told the girls I’ve seen them play two games in one day then come back the next day and play fantastically in tournaments, so we don’t get to use that as an excuse.”

He said playing with consistency was the topic of the day Feb. 24. Young said one of the keys is movement without the ball, especially from midfield toward the opponent’s goalie.

ON OFFENSE: Goals – Xochilt Mendez, Macy Hoover and Sydney Gibson.
