LLANO — The Llano High School football team finished its first week of fall training camp with a scrimmage the night of Aug. 9.

Fans saw a group of players who were very familiar with the basic schemes, which was a little different from last season. That’s because the Yellowjackets have had a year to play in head coach Craig Slaughter’s system, and that familiarity has produced a level of comfort, he said.

“They know the puzzle,” he said. “The kids know how you do things, how to prepare and practice.”

Starting quarterback Layton Rabb has looked fantastic, Slaughter said, thanks to his experience.

“He’s a big part of the equation,” he said. “With that kind of player, you know you’re going to get a certain level of performance.”

His goal is to average 65 offensive plays a contest. Rabb walking up to the line of scrimmage and checking the coverage means not having to send in a play every eight seconds, the coach said.

In all, 97 athletes came out for practice. Slaughter said six players moved because their parents found better jobs elsewhere.
