BURNET — Health issues, criminal activity and high maintenance costs are leading to a shutdown of several highway picnic areas in Burnet County by the Texas Department of Transportation.

One of those includes a scenic overlook on U.S. 281 just south of the bridge over Lake Marble Falls.

By closing the picnic areas, which do not have restrooms, the state can save about $25,000 annually, highway officials said. Others are being relinquished to the control of local governments.
