Lady Pups win district opener

BURNET — The  Burnet Middle School eighth-girls girls B basketball team recently won its first district game of the season after losing three straight in an eighth-grade A tournament.

The Lady Pups beat Llano, 28-18, Nov. 15.

The Lady Pups outscored the Lady Jackets in three of the four quarters, and were never behind at any point during the game.

“We did a good job of pressing and rebounding on the offensive glass,” coach Stephen Shanabrook said. “Our defense helped to seal the win with many fast break steals and great man-to-man coverage on our end of the floor.”

The Lady Pups were led by point guard Makayla Adair, who finished  as the high scorer with 12 points, followed  by Brittany Ashlock with six points, Brandy Wines with four points, Nadeline Pierce scoring three points, Tristen Thompson with two points and Shannon Fickle adding one point.

“Everyone played their part in the win,” Shanabrook said.

The Lady Pups competed in the Burnet A-team Tournament Nov. 14-15.

Coaches said the Lady Pups started slowly but finished strong against the Fredericksburg A team, though Burnet lost, 42-8.

The girls played their first game Nov. 15 against the Liberty Hill A team and lost, 46-3.

Burnet played their final game against the Marble Falls A team.  Both teams played hard, full-court basketball the entire game, coaches said.

The Lady Pups lost to Marble Falls, 32-11.

Despite an elusive victory, the Lady Pups played from buzzer to buzzer and never gave up, coaches said.
