Bulldogs fly over Hawks
The Burnet High School varsity football team dominated from the opening kickoff as they beat the Canyon Lake Hawks 49-6 Friday.
After their double-digit win, the Bulldogs ended their regular season with a 4-3 record in University Interscholastic League District 8-3A.
Llano lost to Liberty Hill, 28-17.
“We’re ready to go (into the playoffs),” said Burnet head coach Doyle Walker. “I think we’re hungry. I think we’re getting better every week.”
Burnet jumped to a 14-0 lead through the end of the first quarter.
First, Spencer Thurman snatched a sideline pass from Dillon Chafin and carried the ball 48 yards into the end zone. Later in the quarter, a screen pass from Chafin to Bubba Richards went 18 yards for a touchdown.
Tyler Clark booted the extra point after both touchdowns.
Three turnovers by Canyon Lake helped the Bulldogs put more points on the board during the second quarter.
Just after the second quarter got under way, Richards recovered a fumble for Burnet. On the following snap from scrimmage, the Bulldogs scored, as Chafin connected with Chandler West on a 31-yard touchdown play.
Later in the second quarter, West intercepted a pass and sprinted 25 yards into the end zone.
Two minutes before the end of the first half, Chafin completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Jacque.
Another fumble recovery by Burnet led to an additional touchdown by Richards from the goal line.
Clark kicked four more extra points, and by halftime, Burnet had a commanding 42-0 advantage.
Soon after the third quarter got under way, Chafin shook off a hard-charging Canyon Lake defender and fired a 45-yard touchdown strike to Jacque.
The play by Chafin made the Burnet coaches very happy.
“I was proud of him,” Walker said. “He stood there and let it go. That’s what it takes to be a good quarterback.”
Clark booted the point after.
As the third quarter continued, Canyon advanced to the Bulldogs’ 43-yard line. Burnet got the ball back on an interception by Thurman. Canyon got the ball back on a Burnet fumble. Then, Canyon receiver Eric Nelson ran a textbook slant pattern and scored on an eight-yard pass from Ross Wagliardo. With 43 seconds left in the third quarter, the score stood at 49-6, and Canyon recovered another Burnet fumble but failed to score during their ensuing drive.
