Learn how things fly at Science Mill on Labor Day weekend

The Science Mill presents the Physics of Flight from Saturday-Monday, Aug. 30-Sept. 1. Future aeronautics buffs will learn about the different types of flight through workshops and hands-on activities, such as building their own copters, aerofoils, and rockets.
Sessions are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday at the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) museum, 101 S. Lady Bird Lane in Johnson City.
“Scientists have always been fascinated by flight and have spent centuries creating solutions for launching stones, jets, and even humans into the air,” said Lian Sing, director of Marketing and Communications at the nonprofit Science Mill. “Whether you’re a budding aviation enthusiast or simply curious about how planes soar through the sky, you’ll be able to step into the shoes of a physicist by exploring the forces of flight through fun, special activities.”
Future fliers can take part in the following activities:
- Ready, Aim, Blast Off!—Design and build a straw rocket, then launch it using the Pitsco Rocket Launcher, experimenting with different launch angles and seeing how far or how high it can fly.
- High-Pressure High-Fliers—Create a mini-airfoil and explore how Bernoulli’s Principle helps wings generate lift.
- Quadcopter Quest—Experiment with a custom-built quadcopter created by the Science Mill team.
All activities are free with Science Mill admission, which can be purchased in advance online or at the door. Visit sciencemill.org or call 844-263-6405 for more information.
