Rita Marie Brockman Book, 79 of Bluffton died Dec. 7, 2010. She was born in 1931 on a farm six miles southwest of Nazareth, Texas, during a snowstorm. She attended school in Nazareth and in 1949 graduated as salutatorian of her high school class.

She worked in Canyon at Walker Drug before she married George H. Book.

Always interested in politics, she was elected to the Nazareth School Board as the first female member. She served five years, including three years as secretary.

She also served as president of the Catholic State League, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Nazareth PTA.

The couple retired to Lake Buchanan in 1985. She was an active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Llano, the art club and the Legion Auxiliary. She loved carpentry, gardening, canning, making quilts and entertaining. She and her husband were avid bowlers in their younger days, winning many trophies.

After moving to Lake Buchanan, she coached Little League softball in Tow.

As she got older, she became an enthusiastic fan of the San Antonio Spurs. Crocheting lace and quilting were also favorite pastimes.

She relished visits from her children, grandchildren and friends.

She enjoyed spending time with them playing dominoes and “Pitch” cards.

In addition to her husband, survivors include children Jackie Koch of Keller, Karen Loyd of Van Vleck, Peggy Birkenfeld, George “Nick” Book and Chris Book, all of Nazareth, Kelly Book of Bastrop, Gayle Seefeldt of Fort Worth, Gary Book of McKinney, Loretta Book of San Angelo, Scott Book of San Antonio and Josh Book of Pflugerville; sister Irene “Chunky”  Wilhelm; brothers Jerome, Cyril “Stump” and Tommy Brockman; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Luella; her parents Agnes and Ed Brockman; sister Regina Steffens; and brother Phil “Bip” Brockman.

A vigil service is 6 p.m. Dec. 10 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Llano.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Dec. 11 at the church.

Burial will follow at Bluffton Cemetery.
