The fall edition of the Demolition Derby cranks up Oct. 11 at the Burnet County Fairgrounds. Despite the catastrophic collisions of the competing cars, the event is light-hearted fun that raises funds for the Burnet County Rodeo Association, according to organizer Rustey Ward.
“You don’t think Demolition Derby and Western heritage mix, but it embodies the spirit,” he told DailyTrib.com. “It’s still neighbors helping neighbors.”
The smash-‘em-up event, which also takes place in April, is one of three annual BCRA fundraisers. Proceeds support local 4-H and FFA programs, including livestock purchases at youth stock shows, scholarships, and cancer research donations. The association also hosts clinics for horseback riding and rodeo queen preparation and maintains the fairgrounds at 1301 Houston Clinton Drive in Burnet for public use.
The Demolition Derby starts its engines at 6 p.m. Saturday. Fairground gates open at 4 p.m. Get there early before it’s standing-room only.
Along with the last-car-running competition are a Power Wheels race for kids, the Miss Demo Derby crowning, and the Best Mullet Contest. The mullet winner receives $50 and a custom belt buckle.
Derby admission is $20 for ages 10 and older, $10 for ages 6-9, and free for children 5 and younger. Parking is free. Attendees may bring their own beverages; a $10 cooler fee is charged at the second gate. Glass containers are not allowed. Concessions will be available.
