Friday night football: Week 2 matchups

It’s Week 2 of the 2025 high school football season, and all four Highland Lakes teams have home games on Friday, Sept. 5. The Marble Falls Mustangs are playing an early-season homecoming game, and the Burnet Bulldogs are taking on a big 5A school. Faith Academy of Marble Falls and Llano both look to go 2-0.
Marble Falls Mustangs vs. Jarrell Cougars
KICKOFF: 7:30 p.m. Friday
WHERE: Mustang Stadium, 2101 Mustang Drive in Marble Falls
LISTEN/WATCH: Listen to the contest on KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune or at KBEYFM.COM starting with a 7 p.m. pregame show. You can also watch a livestream of the game at DailyTrib.com.
LAST WEEK: Marble Falls 49, Crockett 0
The Mustangs (1-0) take on the Jarrell Cougars (1-0) for homecoming, riding the high off of a shutout victory over Crockett to kick off the season.
“I thought our kids did a really good job of attacking and getting out early and keeping their foot on the gas,” head coach Keri Timmerman told KBEY 103.9 FM Operations Manager Ben Shields in an interview.
A standout for the coach was senior running back Joaquin Aguilar, who ran for 164 yards and scored three touchdowns in the game against Crockett.
“Joaquin has really developed some strength and power that he didn’t have last year,” Timmerman said. “He is one of those kids that, if he gets loose, he is tough to tackle.”
Marble Falls’ homecoming opponent, Jarrell, is also 1-0 after beating the Giddings Buffaloes last week.
The Mustangs are looking for redemption against Jarrell, having lost to the Cougars 21-14 when they faced off in 2024.
Burnet Bulldogs vs. East View Patriots
KICKOFF: 7:30 p.m. Friday
WHERE: Bulldog Stadium, 1401 Main St. in Burnet
PREVIEW: Tune in to KBEY 103.9 FM Radio Picayune at 9 a.m. Wednesdays throughout the season for “In the Bulldogs Huddle” with head coach Ben Speer, who joins host Ben Shields for a chat about everything Burnet football.
LAST WEEK: Lago Vista 15, Burnet 6
The Bulldogs (0-1) take on the Georgetown East View Patriots (0-1) for their second game of the season at home after a close loss to the Lago Vista Vikings (1-0) in Week 1.
“It’s a tough loss,” head coach Ben Speer told Shields in an interview. “I think at any point of the game we had a shot to win it.”
Speer noted that while the loss stung, it is already in the past.
“There’s no time to lick our wounds and feel sorry for ourselves. We’ve got to get back up there and get after it because we’ve got another really good opponent coming to Bulldog Stadium on Friday,” he said.
The Bulldogs face off against East View, which is a larger 5A school, dwarfing Burnet’s 4A program. This means their team is bigger and players can get breaks between offensive and defensive play rather than playing both sides of the ball.
“It’ll be a tough opponent for us,” Speer said.
The last contest between the teams was brutal for the Bulldogs, with the Patriots winning 51-0 in the 2024 season.
Faith Academy Flames vs. Valor North Austin Lions
KICKOFF: 7 p.m. Friday
WHERE: Faith Academy, 3151 East RR 1431 in Marble Falls
LAST WEEK: Faith Academy 52, Logos Prep Academy 41
The Flames (1-0) are off to a good start this season, beating the Logos Prep Academy Lions (0-1) for their opening game last week.
This week, Faith Academy takes on Valor North Austin (1-0). The Flames did not play the Lions last year, so Friday’s game will be an original measure of where the teams stand against one another.
Llano Yellowjackets vs. Comanche Indians
KICKOFF: 7 p.m. Friday
WHERE: Jacket Stadium, 400 Texas 71 East in Llano
LAST WEEK: Llano 55, Lytle 14
The Llano Yellowjackets (1-0) are flying into their second game of the season after a dominant win against the Lytle Pirates (0-1) in Week 1.
This week, Llano takes on Comanche (0-1). Last time the teams faced off, the Yellowjackets lost one of their few games of the 2024 season to the Indians, 34-21.
