MFISD prioritizes local contractors for big bond projects

There are $172.2 million worth of bond projects on the docket for Marble Falls Independent School District, which wants local businesses to have a fair shot in the bidding process.

The MFISD Board of Trustees adopted an official resolution encouraging Highland Lakes contractors, subcontractors, and vendors to bid on the sweeping number of projects to be funded by the bond package approved by voters in May

“Our schools are the heart of this community, and this bond program is an investment in both our students and our hometown,” said board President Alex Payson in an Aug. 26 media release. “By encouraging local businesses to bid on these projects, we are creating a win-win for Marble Falls ISD and for the families and neighbors who live and work here.”

MFISD cannot technically award contracts without going through a bidding process, in most cases; however, its new policy gives a strong preference to local bidders and the use of local subcontractors when feasible and as long as state laws and quality standards are met.

The bond projects include major construction, such as building an indoor practice facility at Marble Falls High School, and smaller jobs, like acquiring new personal technology equipment for every student and staff member.

Some projects are already underway, such as expanding a traffic loop at Highland Lakes Elementary School in Granite Shoals and roof repairs at several campuses. An enormous amount of work is slated within the next five years.

“Our bond projects will touch every corner of our district,” said Superintendent Dr. Jeff Gasaway. “By inviting local contractors to participate, we’re not just building and renovating schools, we’re strengthening the fabric of our community.”
