Science Mill offers adults-only workshop on Japanese dyeing technique

The Science Mill hosts a workshop on Shibori dyeing on Aug. 16, part of its new Sips & STEM series for adults. The limited-space event is 4:30-6 p.m. that Saturday at the museum, 101 S. Lady Bird Lane in Johnson City. The cost is $30.
Led by Science Mill educators, attendees will explore the history and chemistry behind this traditional Japanese resist-dyeing technique and learn how fabric folding, binding, and dye oxidation create beautiful, one-of-a-kind patterns.
“This workshop is a fun, hands-on way to see how art and science connect,” said museum Senior Education Specialist Aileen Torres in a media release announcing the event. “It’s a little messy, it’s creative, and it’s a reminder to us all that beauty can come from experimentation.”
Participants will fold and dye their own fabric piece using indigo dye and may enjoy snacks and wine provided by Farm House Vineyards while they learn and create. The workshop fee includes materials, instruction, and refreshments.
Seating is limited. Sign up in advance at sciencemill.org. Walk-in space is not guaranteed.
