Class is in session at the Science Mill over winter break. The hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) museum in Johnson City has challenging yet fun activities as well as daily demonstrations planned from Dec. 21 through Jan. 5.
ACTIVITIES
Da Vinci Bridge—Use engineering skills to build a Da Vinci Bridge using only popsicle sticks. Balance and precise placement are key.
No Hands Challenge—Work in teams to stack cups using simple materials, all within a one-minute time limit. Teaches creative problem-solving.
“Fast & Curious” Cars: A Cardboard Challenge—Create a car using only cardboard.
DEMONSTRATIONS
Foam Frenzy (Saturdays, Mondays, and Thursdays)—Explore the signs of a chemical reaction in the Elephant Toothpaste experiment. Mix hydrogen peroxide and yeast to create a reaction that produces a rapidly growing foam. Observe the production of heat and gas and explore the factors that affect the outcome of the reaction. Apply your knowledge to better understand chemical reactions in the real world.
Breath Power Challenge (Sundays, Tuesdays, and Fridays)—Test your breath control. Compete to see how many breaths it takes to fill a wind bag and whether you can outsmart the knowledgeable Science Mill staff.
