The Smokin’ Mustangs, a new competitive barbecue team in the Marble Falls Independent School District, is looking for student pitmasters in grades 6-12 to join its ranks.

Students will learn to smoke and cook a variety of meats and match flavor profiles through trial runs and contests. The team will compete in the National High School BBQ Association

“Our organization’s goal is to develop leadership, career, and life skills for today’s youth while teaching them to preserve and promote the American tradition of barbecue,” said Smokin’ Mustangs advisor Lauren Riback.

The squad’s first competition is in November.

“Our goal is to make it to the state competition this year,” Riback said.

Neighboring Burnet Consolidated ISD currently fields three barbecue teams. Last year, two of those teams advanced to the World Food Championships.
